Giovanni Calderón Describes "Surreal" Debut
Hear what the New Haven, Connecticut native had to say after making his Revolution II debut!
Hours before New England Revolution II hosted Eastern Conference frontrunners Philadelphia Union II, the club revealed they had signed defender Giovanni Calderón through the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season with a club option for 2025.
The 22-year-old defender joined Revs II following stints with Hartford Athletic, Navy, CSU Fullerton, and Ventura County.
“I’m originally from Connecticut, so coming here this week was a full circle moment,” he said. “I loved every minute of training. The guys are working, the guys are pushing, representing the crest, and doing everything we can to pull out results.
“I think it’s a God-given path so far,” Calderón later added. “With my family coming tonight and seeing them be able to watch me locally, I don’t know how long it’s been. It’s just been, I don’t have words for it. I’m truly grateful. I’m so humbled and honored to have this opportunity with the Revolution.”
Calderón continued to be at a loss for words at a loss for words when asked about reuniting with Puerto Rico National Team teammate Colby Quiñones. The duo were recently teammates during Puerto Rico’s World Cup Qualifying campaign that saw the nation secure a 0-0 draw against El Salvador and an 8-0 win over Anguilla.
“Colby’s my best friend,” the defender said. “We’re brothers now. Coming here and being with Colby and having him introduce me to this process, it’s like no other. I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
Calderón has ten appearances with the Puerto Rico senior national team, where he tallied one assist for the nation. The newly-signed defender will look to build upon his debut performance when Revolution II returns to action on Wednesday, July 10 when they host Huntsville at 11:00 am ET inside Gillette Stadium.
