Giovanni Calderón Showing Up On and Off Pitch
Hear what Richie Williams had to say about Giovanni Calderón's leadership following his first captaincy, which unfortunately ended prematurely.
Wednesday marked a first for newcomer Giovanni Calderón as the New Haven, Connecticut native dawned the captain’s armband for the first time.
But things got scary when Calderón immediately fell to the pitch following the collision as medical personnel rushed to tend to both players in the 12th minute of the match. After a few minutes, Calderón walked off the pitch on his own. His day came to an end just 17 minutes in as he was replaced by Luka Borovic.
Calderon “potentially picked up a concussion,” according to head coach Richie Williams. For Calderon and Revolution II’s sake, hopefully, it’s not, but it was hard to watch in person.
Williams was asked about the reasoning behind Calderon getting the armband.
“He just has a lot of maturity,” the head coach said. “He’s obviously older than some of our guys and has shown a ton of leadership skills. He’s a center back, so he can see the whole field and help lead from the back. He’s been good for us, very solid, very helpful in a leadership role.”
Hopefully, for Gio’s sake, the potential head injury isn’t as bad as it looked andhe is able to make a speedy recovery. It’s unknown at this time what his status will be when Revolution II hits the road to face Columbus Crew 2 on August 28.
