Edwards Jr. Is Hoping To Make Another Donut Run Soon
Edwards Jr.: “I always enjoy the donut run. I did get housed for it because I skimped apparently, so hopefully we get another shutout so I can redeem myself.”
Earl Edwards Jr. suddenly became the New England Revolution’s starter after Djordje Petrovic was sold to Chelsea.
While he will soon be challenged for the spot by a new signing, Edwards Jr. is simply focusing on what he can control.
The veteran goalkeeper has played the last two games, going 1-1-0. He made two saves in a 1-0 loss to CF Montreal before making two saves in a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls.
The 31-year-old is expected to be in goal this weekend when Austin FC comes to town.
“Earl has done a really solid job for us and has played well,” assistant coach Richie Williams said. “We've been happy with Earl. He's done a really good job for us, and we want him to continue to do that.”
The Revs will soon gain the services of Tomas Vaclik, a Czech goalkeeper who played for several European clubs, including Basel, Sevilla, and Huddersfield Town. There’s currently no timeline for when Vaclik will receive his visa.
Edwards Jr. isn’t concerning himself much with the impending competition. Instead, he’s staying present, looking to help the Revs in any way he can.
“I think the biggest thing for me is controlling what I can and preparing myself to play,” Edwards Jr. said. “It’s something I’ve done my whole career and an opportunity has presented itself. I’m happy about it and I want to seize the opportunity and hope to continue to get wins and finish off the season strong.”
While the primary responsibility of any goalkeeper is to keep the ball out of the net, the Revs’ starter must also provide donuts after a shutout.
Edwards Jr. had the honor of bringing a couple of Dunkin’ boxes to the Revs training facility on Thursday. He’s hoping that he gets to do it again soon, and not just because it’s an excuse to enjoy a vanilla frosted donut, his favorite.
“I always enjoy the donut run,” Edwards Jr. said. “I did get housed for it because I skimped apparently, so hopefully we get another shutout so I can redeem myself.”
