What were you doing on your 24th birthday? If you’re like me, you spent it by yourself watching Wheel of Fortune. If you’re like Clay Holstad, you were signing a contract to play soccer.
While in between bites of his birthday cake, Holstad was revealed as the newest member of Rhode Island FC on Friday.
“We are thrilled to bring Clay to Rhode Island,” said RIFC Head Coach Khano Smith. “Clay brings athleticism and speed to our defensive core. His versatility and ability to play multiple positions makes him a valuable asset to what we are building.”
Holstad will be entering his second professional season after playing 2023 with Columbus Crew II. In his lone pro season, Holstad played in 26 games (19 starts) with one goal, one assist, and an 87% pass completion rate in 1,761 minutes.
He was drafted by the Crew with the 43rd pick (2nd round) of the 2023 SuperDraft after playing at the University of Kentucky, where he logged five goals and seven assists in 85 games.
