Carles Gil Wants Change in New England
"We need to be honest: the reality is that we need to change things."
After the New England Revolution’s 2-0 loss to LAFC, Carles Gil spoke frankly to reporters in the locker room after the match. The captain called for change as New England has struggled the last two seasons.
“I think it’s difficult —not just for me, but for everyone,” Gil said. “In the last two years, we’ve lost many games. We don’t win a lot, so it’s difficult to say we’re in a good way. We need to be honest: the reality is that we need to change things.
“For me, for example, we’re far from this team (LAFC),” the captain added. “And not just them, but the best teams [like] Columbus, Miami, etc. Right now we’re not there. Hopefully we can be soon.”
When asked what needs to change, Gil noted that he is just a player and echoed that everyone is frustrated with the performance of the team, including the front office, locker room, and coaching staff.
“I'm just a player, and I want to win,” the Spaniard said. “I don't think anyone, the front office, staff, players are going to say we are on the good way, or this is what we want in the last three years. I think when you are in bad situations and the feeling is also bad. It's not like, ‘oh, we are doing good things, but it's not happening.’ No, it's many games, two consecutive seasons. So in the end, it's trying to find a way, and this club deserves that, the fans too.”
New England is currently in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, 11 points out of a playoff position. The road ahead doesn’t get any easier as the Revs play the Columbus Crew on the road. With just four matches at home, points will be tough to come by while also being at a premium.
If the Revolution manage to miss the postseason for the second consecutive season, the calls for change will only grow louder. In a league where over half of the clubs make the playoffs, performances like New England has had can not be accepted as the status quo.
