Caleb Porter Discusses Upcoming Offseason
Hear what head coach Caleb Porter said the Revs need to address this offseason ahead of 2025.
The New England Revolution will put a bow on their 2024 season when they travel to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to defend their all-time points record against a strong Inter Miami side.
While the focus is on Saturday’s match, head coach Caleb Porter hinted at what the offseason could entail for the Revolution offseason during his weekly sitdown with Zolak & Bertrand on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
Porter expressed how the club has to be thorough when making decisions this offseason.
“It’s really important when we’re making corrections next year and in the offseason, we don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” he said. “That’s the tendency in the offseason when you end a season like this.
“You have to take a deep dive into what went wrong, he added. “I have to look at myself, I have to coach better, I have to figure out what I can do better. It starts with me. Then it will go to the staff. Then it will go to all the departments as well.”
Porter highlighted how he felt changes needed to be made to the roster in the coming months.
“The roster in the offseason needs to be addressed and looked at. We need more pieces for sure,” Porter added.
One interesting tidbit Porter revealed was that players aren’t the only area we may see change.
“There’s a lot of things that need to be addressed,” he said. “We’ve addressed a lot of those things, but there’s definitely going to be some changes on the staff, definitely some changes in certain departments, there’s going to be changes with players. Not massive wholesale changes, but tweaks.”
While there needs to be change, Porter expects “about 70% of the roster” to come back for 2025 and added that he has a good core.
“We can’t be naive, we need to add pieces,” Porter said. “There’s going to be some guys where their options won’t be taken, but we do have a good core.”
Porter also hinted at the idea of where the Revs might look to add.
“We need more goals and we need to stop more goals, as simple as it sounds. Do we add a center back? Do we add a striker? Do we add another winger? All of a sudden, we’re in these games and getting a goal,” the coach said.
In terms of what to expect in 2025, Porter believes his current core plus additions will put the club in a better position.
“I do think I got a good group of guys coming back. They’re going to be on board, and with a little bit of new blood, new energy, it’s going to be a much different year.”
They can start with whoever is responsible for coaching set pieces. They can go for sure.
That pic of Kraft looking over incredulously at a laughing Porter says it all: “I can’t believe we hired this guy.”
