Caleb Porter Discusses Future With New England Revolution
Porter says that he hasn't “had any big picture, long-term discussions with anyone about the future.”
Caleb Porter spoke about his future with the New England Revolution after Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago Fire, which narrowed the path to a playoff spot.
“I haven’t had any big-picture, long-term discussions with anyone about the future,” Porter said when asked if he has spoken to sporting director Curt Onalfo or ownership about next year.
“Obviously, up until this point, we still had a shot in the playoffs. We realize now that that’s slim. Chicago has six games [left in the season], we have five. It’ll take a miracle. We understand that it was a must-win game.”
Porter joined the Revs on December 19, 2023, becoming the ninth official head coach in club history.
After finishing 14th in the Eastern Conference (9-21-4, 31 points), the Revs remade the roster, adding 16 players. Two more came during the summer transfer window, though Dor Turgeman has yet to play.
A slow start (1-4-1) was followed by a nine-game unbeaten run (5-0-4), then nine games without a win (0-7-2). The Revs have gone 2-3-0 during a late playoff push.
While it looks like the Revolution will miss the postseason for a second consecutive year, the team did keep games close, collecting just four multi-goal losses compared to 15 in 2024.
“I believe we’ve improved,” Porter said. “I believe the team is on the right track, but the results haven’t reflected that. That’s the reality. The reality is it’s two years, no playoffs. The reality is that we’ve not won enough games.
“That’s on me. Obviously, it’s not just on me, we’re a club, but for sure, it’s on me; I’m the head coach, so I’m a big part of it. Right now, it’s disappointing. Again, I do think we’re making progress, I do think we’re on the right track. I think that’s reflected in how competitive we are every game, but it is about results in this business. I get that.”
The Revs, currently 11 points below the playoff line with a record of 8-1-7 (31 points), have five games left to play, including three at home.
Then all eyes will turn to 2026, the year that the United States will host the World Cup.
“I believe we’re on the right track, but we’ve fallen short too many times with results,” Porter said. “I have to look at myself, figure that out, and we’ll see what happens from here.
“I’m going to keep fighting, doing my job, and coaching the players. I do believe in the players, I believe in the project, and I believe in the direction. I believe we’re close to success, but I also understand that two years, no playoffs, that’s not the standard of this club. It’s not the standard of myself and the way I want to lead this club, and that’s the bottom line.
“But I do think this team is teed up for success. We just need to keep making moves and adding players. We need time, so hopefully that happens.”
