Boston, we finally have a crest.
Boston Legacy FC unveiled the last puzzle piece to its brand identity today, moving on from its temporary Zakim Bridge insignia.
The team has adopted a green, black and white swan logo, paying homage to the classic swan boats that grace the Public Garden lagoon and swans that call Boston home (like Romeo and Juliet did).
“Swans encompass our core club values of integrity, grit, and style,” said BLFC controlling owner Jennifer Epstein. “They are famously loyal, relentless in defending their territory, and iconic residents of our waterways and green spaces.”
The raised wings evoke protectiveness and strength, a sign that an attacking and defensive mindset will always be at the ready.
The eight feathers on the wing represent the original National Women’s Soccer League teams, including the Boston Breakers, who folded in 2018.
Though no longer the focal point of the design, there is still a nod to the Zakim through the wing’s angled lines reminiscent of the bridge’s cables.
The crest’s historical context and traditional shield shape is consistent with the Legacy name; while it looks back on a previous iteration it also emphasizes the team’s goal of contributing to the city’s storied identity and ushering in a new era for Boston sports.
The green hue is one of the only details that has stayed since the Boston expansion team was first announced in 2023. The color denotes green spaces around the city, namely Franklin Park where White Stadium is located, and the bright tone ensures the club stands out.
Graphic designer Matthew Wolff oversaw the five-month design process. Wolff has worked extensively with several NWSL clubs, such as the San Diego Wave and Gotham FC, designing crests and jerseys. He is a partial owner of USL League Two club Vermont Green FC
The team is hosting a crest reveal celebration and watch party at the Boston Common Saturday. The family-friendly festivities will feature music, food from local vendors, a 3v3 tournament and other fan games, and the opportunity to buy new merchandise. The team will also be streaming the Gotham FC and Kansas City Current match.
