The December days of signings are coming to an end, and this time, Hanson, Massachusetts, is proving itself a hotbed for women’s soccer talent. Hanson native Sammy Smith has signed a two-year contract with Boston Legacy FC and will be joining as a free agent.
“Playing for a sports team in Boston, that’s enough said right there,” Smith said. “That’s a dream come true, to be able to play in front of my friends and family after living abroad for a couple years. I’m just so excited to be a part of something so special, especially in the first year of this club, and to play for Boston. It’s surreal.”
The forward played four years at Boston College, earning a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team, then captaining the Eagles her senior year. Smith amassed 72 caps during her time at BC, starting all but two games. She recorded 26 goals and 6 assists.
Smith spent a 5th year at Texas A&M, where she scored three goals and had seven assists in 22 appearances.
The 24-year-old began her professional career in 2024 with second-division Icelandic club FHL (Fjardabyggd / Höttur / Leiknir), scoring 15 goals in 14 appearances. Her addition helped the team win the league title and promotion to the top flight. She was then immediately placed on loan to first division team Breiðablik. Despite arriving late in the season, Smith scored 10 goals in 10 games and won the first division league title with her new team.
Smith continued with Breiðablik in the 2025 season, netting 19 goals in 37 games across all competitions. The South Shore native played in two Champions League games, scoring 2 goals and giving one assist. She ended the season winning a consecutive league title.
“Sammy is a local player who, after a strong college career, began her professional journey internationally. That experience has helped shape her game, and she’s been a key contributor for Breiðablik in Iceland, scoring consistently and competing for trophies,” said Boston Legacy general manager Domè Guasch. “She’s a versatile forward with a natural instinct for goal, and her Boston roots bring an edge and authenticity that align well with the culture we’re building. We’re excited to welcome her home and see her make an impact here in Boston.”
Smith would be the fourth player from Hanson to make it to the NWSL, following Ally Sentnor, Kristie (who also played at BC), and Sam Mewis.
