Life has been good for midfielder Javaun Mussenden as of late. After earning another call-up to the United States Under-19 National Team, where he and the U.S. faced Japan, Mussenden returned to action at the club level on Sunday as Revolution II hosted reigning MLS NEXT Pro Cup champions, Red Bull New York II.
Mussenden’s impact was tremendously felt in the first minute of first-half stoppage time when a challenge on Myles Morgan led the ball to an open Mussenden. With goalkeeper Austin Causey rushing off his line in an attempt to prevent Morgan from having a chance to double New England’s lead, Mussenden had a wide-open net in front of him as he rocketed a shot into the open net to help seal a 2-1 win for Revolution II.
Following the match, Mussenden called his strike “a crazy play”, and added how he “wasn’t expecting the ball to come” to him, “but as coach says, follow up, keep going through the play. Luckily, the ball dropped to me, and I was able to put it into the goal.”
As mentioned at the beginning, Mussenden recently returned to Revolution II after spending time with the United States at the youth international level. It’s an opportunity Mussenden expressed gratitude for and emphasized how these types of experiences truly boost his confidence when returning to New England.
“I’m definitely grateful to go there," he said. "I was grateful for the opportunity. It definitely boosted my confidence coming back. I feel like when I’m coming back, I feel like I’m high, positive, and just running out there.”
Despite being 18, Mussenden’s journey with New England has been a long one. It all began back in 2023 when the Dallas, Georgia native took a leap and joined the Revolution Academy. After impressing with the Revs Academy, Mussenden made his professional debut with Revs II on August 7th, 2024. Since then, Mussenden has tallied two goals and four assists in 38 appearances.
Mussenden received recognition from the organization on October 15th, 2025, as he was named the 2024-25 Revolution Academy Player of the Year. Despite having the intention to commit to Indiana University, Mussenden decided to fully commit to the New England Revolution on December 9, 2025, as he inked his first professional contract with Revolution II.
While he was away on international duty, Revs II went on a tear as Sunday’s win saw the club extend its unbeaten run to seven matches. Mussenden credits his and his teammates' focus and chemistry to the club’s form.
“The boys have been focused in training," he said. "Even off the pitch, we’ve been focused. We have a great bond, hanging out together, getting that team chemistry up, and I think it all leads to the pitch. I think if we keep playing the way we do, we’ll get the results we need.”
Head Coach Pablo Moreira had nothing but praise for his young midfielder following the match and applauded the growth he’s had as a person and as a player.
“He’s growing up right in front of us," Moreira said. "He’s a young buck, but his maturity level, I would say is a strength of his now. Him being able to fight through the mental and physical adversities out there.
"He plays at the central midfield," the head coach added. "It’s a bit chippy there at times, and he just has a strong mental character right now, and he’s mentally strong to get through games and not let the outside affect him. He’s just taking care of himself, his game, and making everyone else around him better.”
Mussenden and Revolution II will look to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches on June 21 when the club hosts Chicago Fire II at Bryant University’s Beirne Stadium at 11 AM.
