In a night that saw Portland Hearts of Pine control just 25 percent of possession, defend 11 corners, face 21 Union Omaha shots, and rack up 36 clearances, it seemed improbable the visitors would still be holding a two-goal lead deep into the second half. But for long stretches Saturday night, Portland looked poised to pull off one of the club’s grittiest results of the season before Union Omaha stormed back late for a dramatic 2-2 draw.
Omaha looked ready to strike first just four minutes into the match when Josué Gómez split Portland defenders Mikey Lopez and Kemali Green, but Diogo Barbosa came flying in with a crucial sliding block before Gómez could get a clean effort away from near point-blank range.
Instead, Portland struck first in the seventh minute. Konstantinos Georgallides found Bowdoin College standout Tyler Huck in space above the penalty area, and Huck unleashed a blistering right-footed strike from 18 yards out into the upper-right corner for his first professional goal.
Union Omaha nearly answered moments later as pressure mounted on the Portland backline. Sami Guediri sent an effort from distance high and wide before Omaha produced its best sequence of the half in the 17th minute. Following a Lawrence Wootton corner toward the back post, Ryen Jiba sent a header on frame that forced a save from Portland keeper Hunter Morse. The rebound trickled dangerously into the six-yard box, but Morse scrambled off the turf to smother the loose ball just before Kempes Tekiela could send it home.
Morse continued to show why he has quickly become one of League One’s top shot stoppers. Omaha repeatedly pinned Portland deep in its own half, forcing the visitors to absorb sustained pressure. Portland struggled to generate sustained possession, but the defensive shape held firm as Brecc Evans , Kemali Green and Josh Drack combined for a series of timely clearances and blocks.
Portland doubled its advantage a minute into first-half stoppage time after turning defense into attack in an instant. Ollie Wright led the break before slipping a pass into the path of Titus Washington, who cut inside and ripped a right-footed shot into the top-right corner beyond the reach of the diving Omaha goalkeeper for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 Portland lead at halftime.
Despite Omaha dominating possession and earning seven first-half corner kicks, Portland entered the break with a two-goal lead.
Union Omaha’s persistence finally paid off in the 60th minute. After repeatedly threatening from distance throughout the second half, Tekiela found space inside the box and drove a low left-footed shot toward the far corner. Morse got a hand to the attempt, but the ball slipped underneath him and rolled across the line to cut Portland’s lead.
The pressure only intensified from there. Diego Gutiérrez rattled the crossbar from long range in the 58th minute, then forced another save from Morse minutes later as Omaha pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Portland continued to defend desperately as the Hearts looked increasingly pinned in their own defensive third.
Omaha nearly found the equalizer in the opening minute of stoppage time when Gutiérrez blasted another effort off the crossbar following a corner kick. The rebound was eventually cleared, but Portland’s resistance was beginning to crack.
Then came the heartbreaking final blow. In the fourth minute of five minutes of added time, Omaha finally broke through. A ball delivered into the box was headed across goal by Pato Botello Faz, where Samuel Owusu arrived unmarked at the back post and buried the finish from close range to level the match at 2-2.
For Portland, it marked another crushing late draw after appearing moments away from securing all three points. It was the second time in the last month Hearts of Pine have conceded a late-match equalizer after carrying a late lead, turning what once looked like a victory into a frustrating draw.
