The New England Revolution lost their best defender early on in Saturday's match but the team was still able to secure three points. The Revs' versatility was once again on display and helped New England secure three points.
Brayan Ceballos went down in the 13th minute with what was described as a groin injury by head coach Marko Mitrovic. The team is waiting to figure out the severity but the potential loss of Ceballos is greatly impactful.
The Colombian has impressive pace and is known for some great tackles and fancy footwork. Ceballos has 57 defensive contributions, 29 clearances, 12 blocked shots and nine interceptions so far this season.
He also helps New England break lines with his impressive vision and overall passing execution. Ceballos has completed 88.5 percent of his overall passes and 52.3 percent of his long balls.
Replacing him will be no easy effort and require a joint effort. On Saturday, Ethan Kohler stepped up to fill in while stepping back on the field. After starting the match filling in for the absences of Jackson Yueill and Matt Polster in the midfield, Kohler moved to center back with Ceballos being forced out.
The 20-year-old seemed far more comfortable playing on the backline. At times in the midfield he seemed out of place and lost track of his man. While New England was pushed back in its own final third, Kohler was able to help the Revs break out. He was active on the ball recording 104 touches, 24 carries, two interceptions and two clearances. Additionally the 20-year-old completed 96 percent of his passes and 16 of 18 passes in the opponents half.
"Ethan [Kohler] is one player that is more of an all-around player," Mitrovic said postgame. "He understands the game at the highest level, and he can play right back, center back, center midfielder. I think that his understanding of the game helps him to execute whenever he is on the field and he also has a very good technical ability to support his understanding of the game. I think when he was a center midfielder for the first 10-15 minutes of the game, he had a very decent [start], and I think he had a very good game as a center back.”
With the potential abscence of Ceballos and a midweek match against Atlanta United, the Revs' depth will be put to the test. In the match against Rhode Island FC, fans got a little taste of what some of the current bench players could do when they earned starts. Youngsters such as Damario McIntosh and veterans such as Diego Fagundez were able to make an impact. Working backwards, the likes of Tanner Beason, and Kohler could be forced into starting roles if Ceballos misses anytime.
"We have so much quality," Kohler said. "Sometimes you don't see it from the guys that maybe aren't in the squad or aren't playing week in, week out but the reason twe've been so sharp is because we have the quality."
