Just days after the Connecticut state government announced CT United FC would not receive any state funding for their proposed Bridgeport project, which featured a soccer stadium, housing, and retail space, owner Andre Swanston discussed what comes next with the Connecticut Post.
Despite the lack of state funding throwing a roadblock in the club’s desire for a soccer stadium in Connecticut, Swanston says they are not giving up on that dream; however, the decision will force Swanston and the club to reevaluate their options.
In an email sent to the publication, Swanston stated that not receiving state funding may force the organization to consider a location outside of Bridgeport as initially desired.
“We remain committed to delivering a permanent stadium and building a professional soccer club at the highest levels," he said. "We are evaluating our alternative stadium development plans. Unfortunately, due to the governor’s lack of support, our updated stadium plans may not include affordable housing or be able to remain in Bridgeport.”
Swanston also expressed his disappointment in the state’s decision not to issue funds for the project and what it means not only for the club, but also for the people of Connecticut who would benefit from the project.
“The decision by the governor to provide zero state support toward our stadium and mixed-use development project in Bridgeport is deeply disappointing," Swanston said. "Not just for Connecticut Sports Group, but for the hundreds of Connecticut families who would have access to affordable housing, the thousands of workers who would have gained employment, and residents throughout the state who stood to benefit from hundreds of millions in incremental tax revenue and billions in new economic activity.”
Without the state’s funding, the future of the Bridgeport project and the timeline for CT United FC to find a permanent home are up in the air.
We’re less than two weeks away from the start of the club’s inaugural season, which will see CT United FC split home games across several venues in the state of Connecticut.
