Last Saturday was a momentous day in club history as CT took the field at the University of Connecticut’s Morrone Stadium as they welcomed Columbus Crew 2 in their inaugural home match. Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan for CT as a brace from Zach Zengue in the first half had Crew 2 rolling with a 2-0 lead.
Alex Monis was able to draw one back in stoppage time when he got onto his own deflected shot and sent a bouncing ball to the bottom-left corner, but O’Neal Taylor sealed the deal for Columbus when he found the back of the net in the 81st minute as Crew 2 walked away with all three points following a 3-1 victory.
New York City FC II:
2026 has gotten off to a rough start for Matt Pilkington and his NYCFC II side as the club comes into Sunday’s contest in search of its first win of 2026, as they sit in 15th place with three points on a 0-2-2 record with one shootout victory.
The biggest struggle for New York thus far has been its ability to put the ball in the back of the net. Through the opening 360 minutes of action, the club has just one goal to its name, which came in the fifth minute of their March 15 meeting against RBNY II. Meaning NYCFC II comes into Sunday amidst a 265-minute scoring drought.
Looking at the stats, it’s clear to see NYC is struggling as they rank near the bottom across MLS NEXT Pro in offensive stats like shots on target per match, big chances created, accurate long balls, touches in the opposing box, and corners. Despite the results and egregious scorelines, NYC’s defense isn’t as bad as it looks on paper. They rank 14th in interceptions per match (10), seventh in tackles per match (19.8), and tie for eighth in saves per match (3.8).
While the offense is bad, it’s not for a lack of trying. The club ranks sixth in accurate passes per match (409) and ninth in accurate crosses per match (4.5).
