One goal keeper error resonated throughout this group, and to one group of islands off the west coast of Africa in particular.

Spain won another group at a major competition, but no one cares about that, we only care about the unbeaten Blue Sharks of Cape Verde and their three points in second place to seem them advance to the knockouts on their debut.

SPAIN 1, URUGUAY 0

A tame effort from Alex Baena that Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera couldn't keep out just before halftime was enough to see Spain take all three points and the Group H crown.

Baena's cross body shot just before halftime in the 42nd minute seemed a comfortable save for Muslera going to ground. But the keeper opted for a parry attempt, perhaps fooled on a slower moving shot than it seemed, and the off speed ball glanced off and over his hands before trickling into the net.

Oof.

Uruguay wasn't able to generate much attack, just 1-for-5 shooting and 0.20 xG but there were plenty of fireworks late as some back and forth and rough and tumble action boiled over into stoppage time with Agustin Canobbio sent off by Ismail Elfath for a straight leg tackle on Pau Cubarsi in the 95th.

A fitting end to another miserable Uruguay World Cup as the two time champions get grouped for the second tournament in a row.

CAPE VERDE 0, SAUDI ARABIA 0

Not a whole lot of chances in this game either, with the best chance coming in the 74th minute when Cape Verde's Laros Duarte effort from near the penalty spot was stonewalled by an onrushing Mohammed Al Owais in the Saudi goal, one of his two saves on the night as his counter part Vozinha made three in the scoreless shutout.

There is going to be a very long and very deserved island party over the next few days.

GROUP OVERVIEW

I am not going to research the number of times a team has qualified in second place with just three points but it's probably not many and certainly not often with three draws.

The downside to this wonderful Cinderella storyline is that Cape Verde now face Lionel Messi and Argentina on July 3rd. Spain takes on Austria.
