The New England Revolution opted for a different formation against Atlanta United, deploying a 3-5-2 instead of their typical 4-5-1.

The Revs went on to win 1-0, prompting questions about how the Revs should line up going forward.

Head coach Caleb Porter spoke about this on Tuesday.

“It is good to be tactically flexible,” he said. “We know now that we can play two different systems. We played very well, obviously, against Red Bulls and won that game in a 4-2-3-1. We now know we can play a different shape and that can be effective as well.”

“In theory, the opponent has to prepare for two systems because I am more than happy to play either system,” he added. “From here on out, we will pick what we think is the best for each game.”

So, what formation should the Revs use? I don’t have the answer to that, but I do have some thoughts. Let’s take a closer look.
