Tuesday saw fans gain a better understanding of how the United Soccer League will function when the league introduces a new Division One league into the organization’s soccer pyramid.
“USL Premier” is set to launch in 2028 and will serve as the pyramid’s top tier alongside the USL Championship (second tier) and USL League One (third tier).
The long-term vision for USL Premier is to feature 20 clubs in a single national table format. USL Championship will also feature a national table and feature 20 clubs. USL League One will be regionally focused. As announced earlier in the year, the introduction of a Division One league in USL will also see the introduction of promotion and relegation between USL Premier, Championship, and League One.
USL also announced current English Premier League Chief Football Officer Tony Scholes will serve as President of USL Premier once his responsibilities with the EPL conclude this coming summer. The United Soccer League is currently reviewing applications for clubs interested in joining the league’s Division One side. An announcement with teams joining the league will be released at a later date.
