Thursday saw Pablo Moreira and New England Revolution II take the pitch at Gillette Stadium when they welcomed New York City FC II.

Pablo Moreira made two changes from last week’s midweek duel with Columbus Crew 2. First-teamer Donovan Parisian got his first start in net since May 23 as he sat behind the backline of Shuma Sasaki, Gabe Dahlin, Jake Shannon, and Aarin Prajapati. Carlos Zambrano, Logan Azar, Allan Oyirwoth, and Joe Buck formed the midfield quartet behind the attacking pair of Matthew Jean Baptiste and Myles Morgan.

Morgan nearly found the game’s opening goal and contention for Goal of the Matchday in the 21st minute when he got on the end of Carlos Zambrano’s cross from the right flank and attempted to volley a bicycle kick into the upper half of the net, but just got too under it as he sent it above the net.

Things finally broke New England’s way in the 38th minute. It all began with Carlos Zambrano racing up the left flank before attempting to curl the ball forward into the path of Academy prospect Matthew Jean Baptiste. NYCFC II defender Kam Acito laid out in an attempt to deflect the ball away from danger, but did the complete opposite as he slotted the ball past Brennan Klein and into his own net to give New England a 1-0 lead.

The cards kept rolling as NYCFC II defender Joao Loiola Santos received a yellow card in the second minute of stoppage time. Zambrano got things going on the ensuing free kick as he zipped the ball past the NYCFC II wall and the hands of a diving Klein and into the net to double New England’s lead in stoppage time. If the goal wasn’t impressive enough, Zambrano gave the campers at Gillette Stadium another show with an impressive backflip to celebrate the strike.

Another horrendous blunder from NYCFC II paid dividends in the closing seconds of stoppage time as some miscommunication on the backline led to Matthew Jean Baptiste running onto the loose ball and drilling it near-post and past Klein to give New England a 3-0 lead. Jean Baptiste one-upped his teammate Zambrano with an incredible backflip of his own to mark his second goal in as many contests.

Gabe Dahlin nearly added to the lead in the 47th minute when a bouncing free kick inside the six-yard box led to the defender leaping into the air and attempting to strike it home, but Klein made himself big to come up with the save.

Parisian came up big in the 72nd minute as he made himself wide to deflect a close-range effort away from danger to keep the clean sheet intact.

Two changes came in the 74th minute when Grant Emerhi and Sharod George replaced Matthew Jean Baptiste and Shuma Sasaki. New England’s final change of the day came in the 84th minute as Levi Katsell replaced Myles Morgan.

If the three goals in the first half didn’t already seal the deal, things were sealed in the first minute of stoppage time when New England sent a long ball forward that led to Sharod George racing past his defender to run onto the loose ball. Joao Loiola Santos grabbed a handful of George's jersey and tugged the advancing forward down, and as the last man back for NYC, Santos’ day came to an early end as he received a straight red card for the infringement.

It was a mostly easy day at the office for Revolution II as they capitalized on NYCFC II’s mistakes to net three goals and take three points.

Thursday’s result saw Revs II move up to third in the Eastern Conference, and they will look to climb higher when they hit the road to face FC Cincinnati 2 on Sunday, July 26.
