In the 91st minute, Carles Gil fired a shot wide, prompting commentator Ian Joy to say that the game between the New England Revolution and Charlotte FC was heading toward a scoreless draw.
It was a logical assessment of a tight match between two teams next to each other in the standings.
Sustained possession was followed by a big switch from Alhassan Yusuf that was cleared by Charlotte. Peyton Miller sprang into action, heading the loose ball to Diego Fagundez before sprinting into the box.
His effort was rewarded with a pass that allowed Miller to deliver a cross that hit the hand of a Charlotte player. The referee blew his whistle, which led to Carles Gil scoring a late winner from the penalty spot.
The 1-0 win puts the Revs second in the Eastern Conference.
"When we speak about our relentless fighting spirit and that this team is never going to give up, I think that this is part of our identity," head coach Marko Mitrovic explained. "We still have a long way to go, but I just love those small milestones that we are achieving game by game, and how much we are growing as a team."
The Revs are now undefeated in six (5-0-1) and a perfect 5-0-0 at Gillette Stadium. It's the second time in club history they've recorded five straight home wins to start the season, the first being in 2021 when they won the Supporters' Shield.
The last part is critical for the Revolution, who were 4-9-4 at home in 2025 and 5-8-4 in 2024.
"When I came to the club I said to the players, 'Listen, we have to build trust from the people, and we have to build trust from the fans, and it's on us,'" Mitrovic said. "And today I felt that people believed, together with us, that we can win the game."
Gil noted that Mitrovic's arrival brought a new mentality to the club, adding, "For sure, we are showing that we are a different team than the last two years.”
From an outsider's perspective, the culture change has been swift, with every player on board with embodying a relentless fighting spirit.
"[Mitrovic] came in, and that was one of the fundamental things that he asked for," Will Sands said. "It was really non-negotiable. He said, ‘As long as you're willing to put in 100 percent effort, things will work out in the end,’ and I think that is a belief that we all carry.
"You can see in the 95th minute, we still believe that we can get three points, and thankfully, today, we were able to do that."
