Playing short-handed without Jay Tee Kamara and Mo Mohammad – who were both with their respective national teams – and without Ollie Wright and Brecc Evans available, Portland Hearts of Pine suffered a 1-0 defeat down in Florida
A strong contingent of Hearts of Pine supporters made the trip south from Maine, nearly filling the entire south bleachers; made their presence felt throughout the night.
The balance of the match tilted in favor of Sarasota early, who struck in the 8th minute when Aaron Walker unleashed a left-footed effort from distance that found the upper-left corner beyond Hearts' keeper, Hunter Morse. Sarasota looked to build on the lead midway through the half, with Jonathan Bolanos and Sean Karani each firing efforts just over the frame.
Portland gradually settled in and began generating pressure of their own. Hearts nearly tied the match in the 37th minute when Tyler Huck settled the ball to Masashi Wada who found a crashing Konstantinos Georgallides, but sent his attempt went just wide of the far side of the goal. Portland saw a near scoring opportunity just before the half when Georgallides sent a ball to the middle of the box for Wada, but his header was sent just over the crossbar.
Portland opened the second half seemingly more on the attack on offense. An Emiliano Terzaghi attempt was headed wide shortly after the restart, and Georgallides later sent a direct free kick just over the crossbar before heading another chance wide from the center of the box.
The 63rd minute of the match marked the return of Portland defender, Jaden Jones-Riley, who made his first appearance on the pitch in nearly a year after tearing anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last April.
Portland had one final push. Esteban Espinosa found space in the box in the 85th minute but fired high, and a series of fouls and stoppages slowed the momentum in the closing minutes.
After conceding early, Hearts controlled stretches of play and created pressure, but most chances came in traffic and from difficult angles. Ultimately, the early strike by Sarasota forced Hearts of Pine to press, but despite a stronger second half, Portland was never able to level the match.
The result marks Portland’s first League One loss of the season and extends its offensive woes, with the Hearts now held scoreless in three straight matches. Portland does not play again until April 11 when Portland hosts One Knoxville in its first home match of the season, aiming to break the scoring drought in front of the home crowd at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
