Vermont Green FC Kicks Off 2023 USL League Two Season With Win
3 goals and 3 points to start the season.
Vermont Green FC headed down to Newton Massachusetts and secured three points to begin the 2023 USL League Two season with a 3-0 win over the Boston Bolts.
The first starting XI of 2023 featured some familiar faces and new additions. Jake Ashford, Daniel Pacella, and Nathan Schnur were the only returning players from 2022 in the starting XI. New additions Nacho Lerech, Moussa Ndiaye, Diego Ochoa Gomez, Gevork Diarbian, Bernardo Prego, Dylan Lane, Zachary Zengue, and Federico Tellez were among the fresh faces in the starting lineup.
From the start of the game, Vermont dominated possession. They were constantly in the attacking third and knocking on the door in terms of scoring a goal.
Six minutes into the match that goal finally came with Federico Tellez blasting a shot from just outside the box to give Vermont the lead. From there on, The Green didn’t look back.
Then in the 42nd minute, Vermont would earn a penalty kick courtesy of some dumb defending by the Bolts. Newcomer Nacho Lerech went to the spot and slotted home his first goal for The Green in his debut.
“The most important thing is always to win,” Lerech said after the match. “We won, we take the win from here and then the goal of course but the most important thing is that we won.”
The second half was more of the same from The Green. With a large deficit, the Bolts tried to get more players forward but could not put a goal together as they were missing that final piece of the attacking puzzle.
While not appearing on the goal sheet, Gevork Diarbian had an amazing performance. The Providence College winger showed great skill on the ball and was able to blow by defenders. Fellow newcomer Moussa Ndiaye also had a strong defensive performance while also showing some quality passing ability.
In the 63rd minute, Vermont Green head coach Adam Pfeifer made his first changes as Jack Cloherty, Charlie Adams, Carter Beaulieu, and Alfie Pope entered the match with Lerech, Prego, Tellez, and Lane exiting the field. Pfeifer once again went to the bench in the 84th minute as Oliver Martin made his debut for The Green replacing Diarbian.
Vermont would cap off the match with a beautiful half-volley from Zengue in the 90th minute that was the cherry on top of what was a great effort from The Green.
