"The Biggest Noise in the Smallest State"

In the heart of Rhode Island, a new musical movement is taking root, and it's bringing a fusion of passion, rhythm, and sports to the state's soccer scene.
La Banda, an emerging supporters' band associated with Rhode Island FC, is rapidly gaining momentum. To learn more about this exciting initiative, I sat down with Ervin Vargas — the driving force behind La Banda — and asked him a series of questions about the band's formation, aspirations, and the role it aims to play in the local soccer community.
Per Vargas, La Banda welcomes all who wish to be part of this musical movement, underlining its commitment to inclusivity and the belief that the more, the merrier. He acknowledged that La Banda is still in its early stages, but excitement and enthusiasm are steadily attracting new members.
“The band is still small, but several members have joined and we’re actively growing,” Vargas said.
He added that the band is on a trajectory of continuous growth, which promises a vibrant soundscape at Rhode Island FC matches.
Regarding practices, Vargas explained that La Banda is securing a dedicated local practice space, guaranteeing that band members can hone their musical talents without any concerns about noise levels.
Vargas revealed that a democratic process will determine the band leader. He believes that this approach highlights La Banda's commitment to equality and collaboration among its members, fostering a sense of community within the group.
“A band leader has not been chosen, but will be chosen democratically by the band itself closer to the start of the season next March.”
Vargas disclosed that La Banda draws inspiration from the passionate supporter bands found in soccer teams throughout Latin America. Clubs like Comunicaciones FC, Club Atletico Boca Juniors, River Plate, and Flamengo have left a lasting imprint on the band's style and spirit. Vargas wants these influences to promise a vibrant and dynamic musical presence at Rhode Island FC matches.
According to Vargas, Rhode Island FC is fully supportive of La Banda's mission. The team is not only endorsing the band but also actively contributing by assisting with equipment financing and maintenance. This collaboration underscores the value La Banda brings to the local soccer culture.
“Rhode Island FC are excited to have a band among their fans,” Vargas said. “The team is helping us to finance new equipment and to maintain what we have, and we’re thrilled to have their support.”
Regarding recruitment, Vargas expressed La Banda's open arms for new recruits. While they are actively seeking trumpet players, trombone players, and drummers, they are eager to welcome all who share a passion for music and soccer. This is intended to be an inclusive approach that ensures that La Banda remains a vibrant and diverse musical community.

“Help us make the biggest noise in the smallest state!” Vargas said.
All told, Ervin painted La Banda as not just a supporters' band; it's a testament to the power of music and soccer in uniting communities. With a commitment to inclusivity, a democratic spirit, and a passion for the beautiful game, La Banda is poised to become an integral part of Rhode Island's soccer culture. Defiance 1636 invites Rhode Islanders to join the beat, and let the music of La Banda resonate through the Ocean State this coming March.
