Sam McCann Still Vermont Green's Man
The former Vermont Green FC attacker made his return to Virtue Field
Saturday’s match against AC Connecticut wasn’t simply special because of the scoreline. The match saw former Vermont Green FC attacker Sam McCann return to Virtue Field, this time as an opponent.
McCann spent 2022 and 2023 with The Green. The forward scored the most important goal in club history as he propelled Vermont past Lionsbridge FC in the 2022 USL League Two playoffs.
But now McCann is playing for AC Connecticut. Playing time was a factor as indicated by both the player and Vermont Green FC head coach Adam Pfeifer.
Even with The Green defeating the Connecticut club 7-0, McCann was happy to be in Vermont.
“Amazing, super special,” McCann told The Blazing Musket regarding his return. “I mean, obviously wearing a different jersey, but now the fans are cheering my name just as loud as they used to before. Being able to jump up at them at the end, it's a surreal unreal environment. I'm happy to be back here.”
While welcomed by fans and former teammates, McCann’s passion didn’t go unnoticed. Center back Reid Fisher wasn’t afraid to chirp the former member of The Green and McCann got in a scuffle with former teammate Gabe Threadgold.
But at the end of the match, the Green Mountain Bhoys cheered McCann calling the forward “one of their own”. McCann launched himself into the stands and into their arms in a display of the tight-knit community that has been built at Virtue Field.
‘It's a culmination of a lot of events and memories that really stemmed back to two summers ago,” McCann said of the moment. “It feels like a full circle moment.”
So while the scoreline might indicate otherwise, the match against Vermont Green will be a positive memory for McCann. The forward will always know that he has a home in the Green Mountain State.
