RIFC Adds Marcos Ugarte to Coaching Staff
The Rhode Island native joins Khano Smith's staff
Rhode Island FC announced that Marcos Ugarte has joined the club as an assistant coach.
The Rhode Island native was most recently an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at the University of Michigan for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Ugarte is a Rhode Island native and alumni of Providence Country Day school, where he logged 39 goals and 32 assists. As a senior, Ugarte was named 2011 Rhode Island Boys Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year after scoring 16 goals.
After a college career split between Providence College and the University of Michigan, Ugarte played two seasons with the Rochester Rhinos in 2015-2016, winning the USL Championship in 2015.
While injuries sidelined Ugarte’s playing career for the 2017 season, he began his first coaching stint as a volunteer at the University of Michigan in 2017 and 2018.
Ugarte’s playing career restarted in 2018 with a short spell with Ringkobing IF in Denmark’s second division, before returning stateside and playing three seasons for the Birmingham Legion from 2019-2021.
Now, Ugarte is returning to the Ocean State and reuniting with former Legion assistant coach Khano Smith. The Raising Anchor podcast reported Ugarte was spotted during open tryouts for RIFC, signaling this may have been a move a long time coming.
