Revs II Recap: Revolution II 1 - NYCFC II 0
Revs II earn their third shutout of the season on a rainy night in Foxboro.
New England Revolution II returned to action at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night, hosting New York City FC II for the final head-to-head match-up between the two clubs this season.
The Revs made a total of three changes to their starting line-up since their last game against Chicago, with Nico Campuzano, Marcos Dias, and Jake Rozhansky finding themselves in the starting XI.
Campuzano was called into action in the opening minutes of the match, having to make difficult saves in the 2nd and 5th minutes respectively as New York City II applied early pressure.
New York City FC II seemed to be in control for a majority of the first half, with Revolution II finding themselves on the defensive end of the action more than they would have liked. Their best opportunity came late in the 40th minute, when Jordan Adebayo-Smith found himself one on one with NYCFC II’s keeper, Alexander Yagudayev, but was denied by a close-range save.
Both keepers traded saves in the waning minutes of the first half as both teams generated chances, keeping things scoreless at the break.
New England broke the deadlock in the 57th minute thanks to a goal from Malcolm Fry, his second of the season. Fry was able to find the back of the net after Adebayo-Smith had his initial chance blocked by the keeper, batting it across the box for a waiting Fry who capitalized on the opportunity.
Revs II made their first set of substitutions in the 62nd minute as Weverton and Italo replaced Adebayo-Smith and Peyton Miller, before making a second set of subs just eight minutes later in the form of Gianluca Armellino and Brandon Bueno for Fry and Ben Awashie.
The hosts had an opportunity to double their lead in the 74th minute after Yagudayev fouled Armellino in the box, but Dias was unable to convert the penalty for Revolution II.
Revs II made their final substitution in the 90th minute as Jacob Akanyirige entered the match for Dias.
In the 93rd minute, Victor Souza got off one final chance for the hosts, catching Yagudayev off his line as he attempted to chip him but the shot sailed over the crossbar and out for a New York goal kick.
With the win over New York City FC II, Revolution II currently sits in second in the Eastern Conference with 25 points, only trailing Crown Legacy FC.
Revolution II will hit the road to take on FC Cincinnati 2 at NKU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, June 18th at 6 PM EST. You can tune into the action on MLSNEXTPro.com.
