Revolution Wingers Make Impact Against Red Bulls
“It’s important for us to have good performances from these guys. I think both of them had a very good game."
When the New England Revolution are playing their best soccer, they tend to get quality performances from their wingers. In a performance that saw New England net its first goal and its first win of the season, Ignatius Ganago and Luca Langoni had quality performances.
Ganago was the most accurate passer on the pitch who played all 90 minutes completing 95 percent of his passes. The Cameroonian registered 38 touches, including seven in the box. Langoni completed 20 of his 25 pass attempts along with registering 40 touches.
Beyond the stats, both wingers showed no fear going at opponents and were able to skirt by them with ease, gaining entry into the box and creating high-quality chances.
“It’s important for us to have good performances from these guys,” Revolution midfielder Carles Gil said. “I think both of them had a very good game. Luca [Langoni] was very dangerous, running into space. He won the duel every time. [Ignatius] Ganago made that last play on the penalty. Those were key moments form them, and I’m very happy for them.”
If forced to pick between the two, Langoni probably had the better performance. He was such a dominant threat on the flank and a constant headache for defenders.
Caleb Porter thought it was one of Langoni’s best performances in a Revolution uniform.
“He was great today,” Porter said. “I told him after the game, I thought it was one of his best performances since he’s been here and he should have had a couple of assists. Dynamic, ran behind, worked really hard defensively, and had quality on the crosses.”
Langoni should have had two assists to be exact. On two occasions he was driving in on goal but instead of rocketing a shot goalwards, the winger made the typical FIFA EA FC move, passing the ball across goal to a trialing Ganago who was unable to convert on both occasions.
While it can be debated whether or not Langoni should have opted for the pass, it is an objective fact that a player of Ganago’s caliber should be finding the back of the net during these point-blank opportunities. It is exactly why the Revolution acquired him on loan for the upcoming season: to score goals.
It has been a long time since the Cameroonian has found the back of the net (the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season, to be specific). Still, the winger isn’t worried about the drought and believes that he will score soon.
“Yeah, for sure, I think it’s going to happen soon,” he told The Blazing Musket. “I'm not really frustrated because today we have the rain, but for sure, I want to score. I want to score goals. I'm here for this so maybe next game I’ll score and let's get a win again.”
