Revolution Notebook: Bye's Substitution, Gil's Shooting, and Edwards Jr.'s Debut
We cover a variety of storelines from Saturday's win.
The New England Revolution defeated Orlando City SC 3-1 on Saturday. Here are some notes from the victory.
Bye Exits At Halftime
Brandon Bye returned to the starting lineup on Saturday after being sidelined since May 20 with a shoulder injury.
The right back contributed 45 minutes before being replaced by Omar Gonzalez. Gonzalez played centrally with Andrew Farrell moving to the right.
After the game, Bruce Arena said, “[Bye] had a little muscle tightness, so we took him out at halftime.”
When asked about the decision to play Farrell as an outside back, Arena said, “Andrew probably played as a right back for the first eight years of his career here so he can play there. We position him there in training once in a while.”
Carles Gil Is Working On His Shooting
Carles Gil scored his seventh goal of the season on Saturday, matching his 2022 output. In fact, seven is his best mark since his first season in MLS when he had ten.
When asked if he’s putting more of an emphasis on shooting this year, Gil said, “Yeah, it's a thing that I want to improve. Sometimes the defenders obviously know that I can make some passes or sometimes they stay back. So yeah, it's a thing to continue to improve.”
Earl Edwards Jr. Shines in First Start of 2023
Earl Edwards Jr. started in goal on Saturday since Djordje Petrovic is on international duty. The experienced netminder did well, making three saves.
Arena praised Edwards after the game, saying, “He did well. I would’ve liked to see him get a clean sheet and all, but we got a little sloppy on that play not marking the [number] 13 [Duncan McGuire] who scored. But Earl did a real good job.”
Edwards also commented on his 2023 debut, stating, “I thought I did well. It was a good team performance. Happy to get the win, and obviously at home, the goal is always to get three points, and happy to play my part. And the guys did well to score three goals. I’m happy with the result.”
