Revolution II vs NYCFC II: Three Thoughts
Three thoughts following Revs II's victory over New York.
After a rollercoaster of a result against Crew 2 on Wednesday, Revolution II got back into the win column on Saturday when goals from Liam Butts and Allan Oyirwoth propelled the club to a 2-1 victory at home.
Here are three thoughts
1 - Dias’ Distribution
One of the bigger factors in Revolution II’s offense thus far has been the efforts of forward Marcos Dias. Through six appearances, Dias has tallied two goals and three assists.
More importantly, his passing has led to Revs II generating some good chances. He has 23 key passes on the season, the most across MLS NEXT Pro following Saturday’s match.
It’s clear that Revolution II's offense runs through Dias. Hopefully, we’ll see him continue to contribute throughout the season.
2 - Butts’ Barrage
After an injury-riddled 2024 campaign, forward Liam Butts has started 2025 with some good outings. He found the opening goal in the 18th minute and with his goal on Saturday, Butts extended his goal-scoring tally to four on the season.
After starting the season with two average performances, Butts has gotten into form as of late as he’s found the net in three of his last four appearances.
While early in the season, Butts’ four goals have him in a nine-way tie for third in the Golden Boot race. If Butts can keep this level of production up, there’s a solid chance we could see him battling for the honor come the end of the season.
3 - Allan’s Awakening
One of the more exciting additions to the organization this offseason was Ugandan youth prospect Allan Oyirwoth. After playing deeper to start the season, he's become present on the offensive end in the past two matches.
Oyirwoth came close to finding the opener on Wednesday when Revs II hosted Crew 2. It started when Dias curled a corner kick from the right flank to the midfielder. Oyirwoth miraculously chested the ball and sent a strong volley that narrowly trailed wide right.
After missing out on Wednesday, he wasn’t wasting his chance on Saturday against NYCFC II. It started when a forward pass fell to Damorney Hutchinson with his back to goal. Hutchinson tapped the ball into a pocket of space atop the box that Oyirwoth ran onto as he rocketed the ball into the net to give Revs II the lead and eventual 2-1 victory.
Oyirwoth is still a raw prospect, but he’s someone Revs fans should be excited to see in the future.
