Revolution II Recap: Revs II Secures PK Victory
Revs II fight back to earn two points at home.
Richie Williams and New England Revolution II returned to action Sunday when they welcomed club legend Jake Rozhansky and NYCFC II inside Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.
The past couple of weeks have been tough for Revs II as they came into Sunday amidst a two-game skid. It started on May 8th when Revs II suffered a 2-1 loss on the road against Crown Legacy FC. Revs II's woes continued in their most recent match as Philadelphia Union II secured a dominant 3-1 win inside Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.
Williams made three changes from last Sunday’s defeat against Philly. Max Weinstein made his first start in goal since April 10th.
Hesron Barry, Tiago Suarez, Victor Souza, and Eric Klein comprised the backline behind the midfield trio of Luka Borovic, Maciel, and Patrick Leal. Malcolm Fry, Marcos Dias, and Alex Monis formed the attack up top.
On the opposite side of the pitch, Rozhansky, a former Revs II player, started in the midfield for New York City FC II.
A good run by NYCFC II led to them finding the back of the net just six minutes in after Piero Elias cut a ball to Chris Tiao, who tapped it into the bottom-left corner to give New York a 1-0 lead.
A great ball forward got Revs II’s offense rolling in the 22nd minute as Alex Monis sent a ball centrally to Marcos Dias inside the box. Dias chested the ball and took a step before unleashing a shot into the left side of the net to level the match.
Revs II nearly found the net again in the 27th minute after the keeper came off his line. Dias attempted to catch the defense lacking, but a defender was right there to head his chip away from danger.
The referee pointed to the spot in the 33rd minute as Victor Souza fouled Kelvis Haxhari inside the box. Piero Elias stepped to the spot for NYCFC II and laid a shot centrally and into the net to regain the lead for New York.
Revs II had a chance right at the start of the second half when Maciel sprung a pass forward to Alex Monis, who outpaced his defender. Monis attempted to rocket a shot to the upper-left corner, but the keeper got a hand to it and deflected it up and over the net.
But Revolution II’s woes continued as Taylor Calheira stung one into the upper-left corner to give NYCFC II a 3-1 lead in the 52nd minute.
It looked as if Revs II had found themselves a lifeline back into the match when a ball across the goal found the back of the net, but a questionable offsides call immediately wiped the goal off the board.
Revolution II found their way back into the match in the 80th minute when Gevork Diarbian cut the ball centrally to Liam Butts, who struck it into the upper-left corner to shrink NYCFC II’s lead to one.
Eric Klein came to the rescue for Revs II in the 88th minute. Klein leaped into the air and headed home the corner kick to level the match at three apiece.
Neither side could find a game-winner late as the match ended in a 3-3 draw, which meant we were off to a penalty shootout.
Klein stepped to the spot with the match on his shoulders. After netting the game-tying goal to get to penalties, the 16-year-old stepped to the spot with the chance to earn the shootout win and the extra point. Klein came up huge as his right-footed shot to the bottom-right corner went in and gave Revs II the 4-3 shootout win.
Sunday’s two points now see Revolution II move into a three-way tie for ninth place in the East with 13 points on a 3-5-2 record with two shootout victories. Revolution II will look to build off Sunday’s performance when they return to action on Saturday, June 1st on the road against Chattanooga.
