Revolution Evaluating The Roster After 1-5-1 Start
Porter: “If we’re happy with where we’re at, and we’re happy with the group we have, then something is wrong."
The New England Revolution are taking a look at themselves after a 1-5-1 start to the regular season.
On Saturday, the Revs lost 2-0 to New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. The result comes after a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire and a 1-0 win over Charlotte FC, both at home.
The Revs currently sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with four points. Only San Jose (three) has fewer points in the league.
“If we’re happy with where we’re at, and we’re happy with the group we have, then something is wrong,” Porter said. “At the end of the day, we now have a snapshot, a seven-game snapshot. We don’t like what we see overall, and we don’t like where we’re at. Of course, I’m the coach so I’m a part of that as well.”
The beginning of the year was complicated by the club balancing Concacaf Champions Cup and league play. This amounted to playing eight games in 26 days during the initial stretch.
The Revs were recently eliminated from the regional tournament by Club America. They now have an extended period where they’ll only play on weekends. This will give them some consistency regarding training.
“We have to figure out as we evolve, which we will evolve, we have to figure out how to get points and win games along the way,” Porter said. “I’m not just going to toss this year off. We’re going to keep fighting, we’re going to keep working.
“We have seven weeks in a row here where we have a full week of training and then we have a game on the weekend. We have to continue to train, to prepare, to reflect, to look at all the mistakes we make, to make those corrections, and go again.”
This is Porter’s first year as the head coach of the Revolution. Hired on Dec. 19, Porter opened preseason camp on Jan. 13. He has used the time since to assess the roster.
On Thursday, Porter noted, “It's not out of the realm of possibility that we're going to add some players here before the window closes.” The primary window closes on Apr. 23.
“We’re evaluating the roster, for sure,” Porter said after Saturday’s game. “We’ve been evaluating it for the last three and a half months. There’s a lot of things that I think we need to look at and think about. I don’t think it’s going to happen overnight.
“I do think we still have good players here. We still have a core that is capable. But where we’re at in the season, the results, the performances more than the results even, the performances show us that we have to improve.”
He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is he?
My 9 year old just asked, “what if they throw big money back at Matt Turner?”
