Revolution Draw Club Atlético Independiente in Round One of Concacaf Champions Cup
Revs look to avenge 2022 CCL woes as they open the revamped CCC against Panamanian side CA Independiente.
As the New England Revolution prepares for another action-packed season, they learned who they would face in Round One of the revamped Concacaf Champions Cup (f.k.a Concacaf Champions League) as the draw occurred Wednesday evening.
The Revolution drew into the A5 slot as they patiently waited to see who they would open the 2024 CCC against. It took until the final ball, but Panamanian side Club Atlético Independiente eventually drew B5 and would face the Revs in the opening round.
CA Independiente secured their spot in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup after making the semifinals of the 2023 Central American Cup. It marks the second appearance in the tournament for the Panamanian club.
Founded in 1982, Independiente is a six-time Liga Panameña champion, having won the last three straight league titles in Panama’s topflight.
The Revolution earned their spot in the tournament after finishing sixth overall in the 2023 MLS standings. A dominant win from Columbus Crew over LAFC to claim the 2023 MLS Cup also benefited the Revolution making it into the tournament. Their inclusion marks the Revolution’s second appearance in the last three years. Their most successful run came in 2022 when they made the Quarterfinals and fell short against Pumas.
Round One will feature a two-leg series that sees the winner on aggregate scoring advance. The higher seed on December 11th's Concacaf club rankings determines who hosts Leg 2. With the Revs at #23 and CA Independiente at #53, the Revs will travel to Panama to open the series before returning to Gillette Stadium for Leg 2.
No specific dates or times have been released, but Round One of the tournament kicks off in early February. Expect official dates and times to release in the near future!
