After days of reporting from Seth Macomber and Tom Bogert, USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner’s return to New England is official.
Turner’s summer began with an eight-million Euro move to French side Lyon. A move that sparked controversy, as issues within Lyon that nearly led to their relegation to Ligue 2 had the club trying to find a way out of the deal.
After attempts failed, the move went through; Lyon and the Revolution worked to bring the USMNT keeper back via loan. A deal that sees Turner remain with New England through June 30, 2026.
Turner’s return to New England will see him occupy the third and final Designated Player spot for the remainder of the season. In 2026, Turner returns as a TAM-eligible player.
After going undrafted during the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, Turner found a home in New England. Following a loan spell with the Richmond Kickers, Turner developed into a consistent starter in New England.
His seven seasons with the Revs saw him appear in 111 matches across all competitions, where he tallied 146 saves and 24 clean sheets across 10,046 minutes of action. It also saw him take home the Goalkeeper of the Year and helped secure the Revs a then-historic Supporters’ Shield title in 2021.
Following his departure from the Revs in the summer of 2022, Turner went on to spend the next three seasons in Europe, where he had stints at English sides Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace.
Turner’s time in Europe saw him appear in 32 matches across all competitions, where he made 37 saves and 11 clean sheets while securing the 2023 FA Community Shield with Arsenal and the 2025 FA Cup with Crystal Palace.
The 31-year-old’s efforts with the Revs and England have led him to earn 52 caps with the United States Men’s National Team, where he made 43 saves and notched 27 clean sheets while helping the Red, White, & Blue secure a Gold Cup title in 2021 and back-to-back Nations League titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24
Turner will look to make his Revolution return when the club hosts D.C. United on August 9.
I don't expect this gets the Revs in the playoffs, but it should be enough to get Turner on the World Cup roster.
I always liked Turner and glad he is back. I think he will be an upgrade over Ivacic who I think is too often flat footed and not quick enough in ball distribution decisions. I agree it will not be enough to put them in the playoffs unless the offense gets much better. I do worry it may be enough though to muddy the waters around Porter, who I think needs to go.
