Report: New England Revolution Nearly Acquired Raul Ruidiaz
According to Sounders at Heart, New England had a deal lined up to acquire the striker
According to a report from Sounder at Heart and Niko Moreno, Raul Ruidiaz nearly became a member of the New England Revolution.
Nestled in an story detailing that the striker won’t return to the Seattle Sounders this season was the nugget that both the Revolution and Atlanta United showed “serious interest” in Ruidíaz as recently as the summer transfer window and were close to finalizing a deal according to Moreno.
Moreno added that Ruidiaz would like to stay in MLS.
The striker has appeared in 138 matches for Seattle and has scored 72 goals but has declined in recent seasons. The 34-year-old has only made 14 starts so far this season as a designated player but has eight goals to his name. If New England was able to convert him to a non-DP player and possibly get Seattle to retain some of the striker’s salary a move would make more sense than a straight sway.
But as Caleb Porter mentioned, New England needs to get younger as a group. Acquiring Ruidiaz would only increase the veterans on the roster.
But the Revolution need depth at striker. While Giacomo Vrioni and Bobby Wood are healthy, that hasn’t been the case for the majority of the season. In 2025, New England can not make the same mistake of only having two natural strikers rostered.
So if the Revolution can get Ruidiaz on a discount in the winter, a move might make sense. If that can’t happen, it might be a blessing in disguise that this deal didn’t cross the finish line in the most recent transfer window.
