After a disappointing group stage exit at Copa America 2024, Fox Sports’ Doug McIntyre has reported that Gregg Berhalter will not remain the head coach of the United States Men’s Soccer Team.
After being hired in 2018, Berhalter was briefly away from the team after the 2022 FIFA World Cup as the organization let his contract expire amidst the scandal between the Reyna’s and the Berhalter’s in December of 2023. U.S. Soccer announced on January 3, 2023, that it had hired a law firm to investigate a domestic violence incident in which Berhalter admitted he had kicked his now-wife when they were in college.
In March 2023, the investigation was completed. The ensuing report showed that Claudio and Danielle Reyna threatened to reveal damaging information about Berhalter to U.S. Soccer officials during the World Cup due to their son Gio Reyna receiving limited playing time.
Even after all of this, Berhalter was rehired in June as the U.S. began to prepare itself for the 2026 World Cup which will be hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
For all his critics, Berhalter amassed 44 wins, 15 losses, and 13 ties during his time as manager of the Stars and Stripes. Berhalter also led the U.S. to two continental championships as he reportedly leaves his post with the highest winning percentage of any permanent USMNT manager.
According to McIntyre, a new manager is expected to be named before the USMNT plays its next match, a friendly against Canada in September of 2024.
What a poor showing they had this year.
