Recap: Revolution II 0 - 1 New York Red Bulls II
Revolution II suffer second-straight defeat following a frustrating night.
New England Revolution II returned to action Friday evening as they faced off against New York Red Bulls II for the first time.
Revs II looked to get back into the win column after suffering their first loss in their last outing against Columbus Crew 2.
Five changes and a formation shift came following the loss to Crew II. Max Weinstein made his first appearance of the 2023 season as he started in goal. A back three for Revs II as Pierre Cayet, Victor Souza, and Tiago Suarez provided the defense. Malcolm Fry, Jake Rozhansky, Ben Awashie, and Colby Quiñones comprised the midfield as Marcos Dias, Jordan Adebayo-Smith, and Brandonn Bueno provided the attack.
Bueno came close to notching his second goal of the season in the 7th minute as he found himself on the left side of the box. Bueno pushed towards the goal and attempted to slot the ball into the bottom right corner, yet his shot was too far to the right as it rolled out for a goal kick.
Revs II were awarded a golden opportunity in the 19th minute as Curtis Ofori took Bueno down inside the box, which awarded Revs II a penalty kick. Bueno attempted to find the bottom left corner, but the keeper was all over it to prevent Revs II from taking the lead.
Cayet was the first to enter the books as he received a yellow card in the 21st minute after fouling Bento Estrela. Suarez entered the book in the 41st minute after committing a foul on Frank Ssebufu. Ben Awashie received a yellow card in the 53rd minute after fouling Curtis Ofori.
Revolution II’s first substitution came in the 71st minute as Academy product Olger Escobar made his Revolution II debut. Escobar becomes the twenty-seventh Revolution Academy product to make their professional debut with Revolution II.
A critical error haunted Revolution II in the 75th minute as Suarez committed a foul on Ibrahim Kasule inside the box, which awarded New York Red Bulls II a penalty kick. Oladayo Thomas stepped up to the spot as he looked to find the game’s first goal. Thomas sent a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner and into the net to give NYRB II a 1-0 lead late into the game.
Cayet’s night ended in stoppage time as he received a second yellow card after fouling Copeland Berkley. Cayet’s sending-off means the defender will miss the June 4th road meeting against NYRB II.
It was a frustrating night for Revolution II as they created numerous chances yet could not capitalize on any of them. Friday’s 1-0 loss marks the second consecutive loss. While Revs II maintain third place in the East, results around the league could see them drop down the table.
Revolution II will look to get back into the win column on Sunday, April 30th, as they host FC Cincinnati 2 at 5:00 PM ET.
They had many chance but couldn't find the back of the net.
