Prince Saydee Named to USL Championship TOTW
A brace in Hartford Athletic's 4-2 loss to Memphis 901 FC saw him named to the league's best XI for a team-high fourth time this season.
Despite a 4-2 loss that saw Hartford Athletic’s playoff hopes officially put to bed in 2023, the silver lining on Saturday night came in the form of a brace from their most prolific striker.
Prince Saydee’s two first-half goals were enough to give Hartford a come-from-behind 2-1 lead over the hosts at halftime, and enough to earn him a spot in this week’s USL Championship Team of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Down 1-0 in the 26th minute, Hartford responded with Edgardo Rito streaking down the right side. Finding Saydee at the top of the box, the forward cut back to his right foot and past a defender, opening space for a shot.
Taking the ball into the box, Saydee eventually found the gap through traffic and curled a right-footed finish past a diving Andrew Romig and into the right-side netting to knot the match at one, his sixth strike of the year.
An active opening 45 minutes for Saydee would continue in the 32nd minute when he put himself on the receiving end of a giveaway from Romig, who could not find a teammate in an unmarked attempt to play the ball out of the back. Taking the ball onto his favored left foot with space to run, Saydee picked out the top left corner with an inch-perfect curler from just outside the box, beating a rooted Romig and giving Hartford the 2-1 lead — his team-leading seventh goal of 2023, and his 11th in two seasons in Green and Blue.
Although Hartford would go on to concede three goals in the second half and cement what seemed like their long-confirmed fate in the depths of the Eastern Conference, Saydee’s continued production this season is one of the few positives Omid Namazi and his squad can take from the night as they look to finish out their final six games of the year on a high note.
