Porter, Campana Comment On Frustrations Of Revolution Fans
“Obviously, we haven’t won enough games. I get it. But I hope when we come back home, let’s just cheer these players on and give them a chance."
The New England Revolution are looking for fan support as they embark on a late playoff push.
The Revs are currently eight points below the line with seven games to go. Four of those will take place at Gillette Stadium, including next Saturday’s clash against Charlotte FC.
While the Revs have been strong on the road, collecting 20 of a possible 42 points, they’re 3-8-2 at home. Chants asking for the removal of head coach Caleb Porter have been heard at recent home games.
“It’s been tough, right? In the middle of games, fans are chanting for me to be out. It’s a tough energy on the guys. They take it hard because it’s just a weird vibe,” Porter said after Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew.
Saturday’s game was a strong performance for the Revs, who led 2-0 at halftime. Committed defense in the second 45 secured three points against the Crew for the first time since 2021.
“These players showed it tonight, they’re fighting,” Porter said. “They want to make it right. I’m really proud of them for that.”
Last weekend, Carles Gil expressed frustration to reporters, saying, “In the last two years, we’ve lost many games.” He later added, “We need to be honest: the reality is that we need to change things.”
Gil, who has played all but three minutes this year, was active during his 90 against the Crew.
“With Carles, there’s a few questions this week. Is Carles this, that? It’s absolutely ridiculous,” Porter said. “He’s so bought in, he cares. Him and I have a great relationship. I get it, you look for something here, a chink in the armor, but there’s nothing there.”
While he acknowledges that results haven’t been good enough, Porter hopes that Revolution supporters can get behind the players during the final stretch of the season.
“Obviously, we haven’t won enough games. I get it,” Porter said. “But I hope when we come back home, let’s just cheer these players on and give them a chance. Give these players positive energy. They need that. They’ll thrive on that, they really will.”
Leo Campana, who scored his sixth goal of the season on Saturday, explained that supporters play a big role.
“Obviously, we understand the fans’ frustration,” Campana said. “They’re frustrated. I came here to win, I came here to compete. We had a really rough start to the season, but this isn’t over until the last game, so we still have chances to make the playoffs and anything can happen.
“The fans keep believing in us, that we’ll work really hard to get in there and then, as I said, anything could happen.”
OH so now it's OUR fault he sucks.
The fans have been behind the players all season long. The boos Porter hears during games, that's exclusively for him and his milquetoast game plan. For a team with their record, the players are still a likable group and would probably be a playoff team with a better coaching staff.
And how does Porter consistantly say all the wrong things? That's quite a talent.
