Onalfo, Porter Talk About The Revs' Transfer Strategy
Onalfo: “We have the ability to make another big move."
The New England Revolution are always looking for opportunities to improve their roster.
On Saturday’s episode of The Soccer Show, sporting director Curt Onalfo spoke about the current state of the team.
“We believe we have a very strong roster and we just got to continually make it better,” Onalfo said. “That’s obviously what you’re always trying to do when you’re in this business.”
As it stands, the Revs have three Designated Players: Carles Gil, Tomas Chancalay, and Giacomo Vrioni. This means they only get one U-22 slot, which is occupied by Dylan Borrero.
But the Revs could still make additions, especially since they have an open senior roster slot.
“We created some space, selling some international spots and making sure that we have enough cash,” Onaflo explained. “We have the ability to make another big move, and we're going to just be very intelligent about that and work with Caleb [Porter] and the staff to make sure that it's the right person that can help us.”
“In this business, there are player moves and everything else. So if we were to happen to move a player, we could bring in one as well. So we'll look at all the things but the underlying belief is we have a strong roster, and we want to enhance that every day with a training environment and the culture that Caleb and I have implemented, and just continually push forward to get points and get better.”
During his media availability on Saturday, Porter said he likes the Revolution’s roster, though he’s always looking for ways to improve his team.
“I think we're always looking to make moves,” Porter said. “Even when we're really, really good, we want to get even better all the time. So, at the end of the day, I like the roster, but I'm always going to want more pieces, always. Always going to want to get better.
“Some positions maybe we feel a little bit more, kind of, secure with where we're at. As far as our game model, as far as the level, as far as the depth, and in some positions maybe we feel like we have some good pieces, but maybe we can get even better.”
Caleb Porter has a vision for the team and he needs the pieces to do it. He needs a proven striker to start with not knowing what Vrioni is going to give us and Wood who hasn't done much since the first half of last season. Something Curt Onalfo should have addressed in the off season.
This may be an unpopular take, but I listened to these two yesterday, and am completely underwhelmed.
