It’s 2025! Happy New Year, Revolution faithful.
There’s no doubt that the New England Revolution will be looking to move on from last year as quickly as possible.
The Revolution entered 2024 looking for a fresh start, under a new coach, and full of hope that they could return to the form that saw them comfortably in second place in MLS midway through the previous season. There was good reason for optimism. The Revs were, after all, just a few seasons removed from a record-setting, trophy-lifting 2021.
Instead, they set records in the opposite direction, conceding the most goals in club history and setting a new low benchmark for GF/GA ratio.
By all accounts, something needed to change ahead of the 2025 season.
Credit where it’s due: sporting director Curt Onalfo and the front office seem to recognize this and have been very active in the offseason. They’ve cut, declined, traded, or otherwise offloaded 16 players from the 2024 roster and are in the process of replenishing the roster with multiple new signings.
The goal, as stated by Onalfo himself, is to be a team “that makes the playoffs and positions ourselves to compete for championships”.
There’s still lots of work to be done, but plenty of flexibility to do that work.
With the new year serving as a natural inflection point, let’s look into the state of the rebuild, the roster strategy, and determine if New England is on course for an improved 2025.
