MLS has forever changed as the league calendar has shifted and the New England Revolution welcomed the change.

“The Revolution welcome today’s Board of Governors vote to align Major League Soccer’s schedule with the international soccer calendar beginning in 2027, an important milestone in the continued evolution of our league,” a club statement said. “For years, the misalignment of our transfer windows has posed challenges for the Revolution and all MLS clubs, often complicating negotiations for both incoming and outgoing players, or causing disruptions for teams as they prepared to enter the playoffs. By adopting this new format, we will be better positioned to compete for top talent on equal footing with the leading leagues worldwide.

“We also appreciate the league’s proactive steps to minimize the impact of this transition on cold-weather markets like New England, where seasonal climates can significantly affect the matchday experience,” the club later added. Revolution fans can be confident that more than 90% of the league’s games fall within today’s current MLS footprint. Additionally, the league schedule will minimize the number of home games the Revolution play in the winter by having us on the road both before and after the winter break.”

Beginning in the summer of 2027, MLS will adopt a summer-to-spring season format. The calendar transition and the new regular season structure were approved during Thursday’s MLS Board of Governors meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.

The 2027-28 MLS regular season will begin in mid-to-late July 2027 and conclude with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup presented by Audi in late May 2028. Like other major international leagues, MLS will observe a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, with no league matches scheduled in January.

Before the calendar change, MLS will stage a transition season from February to May 2027, featuring a 14-game regular season, playoffs, and MLS Cup. Those results will determine 2027 qualification for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup.

The club also confirmed that with MLS moving to Apple TV, season-ticket holders will get access to Apple TV free of charge. This change will begin in 2026.

There are still barriers to cross as the league will have to negotiate with the MLSPA regarding the shift.
