Carles Gil Leaves Game With Tight Achilles
“Yeah, Carles [Gil] had to come out at halftime. We don’t think it’s anything serious, but his achilles was tight, probably because of the cold, and just maybe adjusting to the turf – new surface."
Caleb Porter delivered some news that will likely have New England Revolution fans not feeling so great.
As New England came out from the locker room to begin the second half, the Revolution made a few changes including the swap of Carles Gil for Esmir Bajraktarevic. Seeing Gil play less than 90 minutes is quite rare but it seemed that Porter was just looking to give his star player a rest.
But that wasn’t exactly the case. Porter revealed after the match that Gil was dealing with an achilles issue.
“Yeah, Carles [Gil] had to come out at halftime,” the coach said. “We don’t think it’s anything serious, but his achilles was tight, probably because of the cold, and just maybe adjusting to the turf – new surface. So, we thought we needed to be careful with it and we knew we had the kid Esmir [Bajraktarević] to put in.”
While it is better to be safe rather than sorry, fans will be worried that this could be the start of a major issue. Losing a player of Gil’s caliber for any amount of time is a major blow. Even with Tomas Chancalay, Gil still primarily makes the magic happen for New England’s attack.
With New England returning to MLS play on Sunday, the Revs captain won’t have a ton of time to recover. Even if the issue isn’t serious, his status for the match against Toronto FC could be in question due to the tight turnaround.
And all I could think of is why did you spend so much time in Florida?
