Hartford Sign Former Charleston Midfielder Joe Schmidt
The 25-year-old had a breakout rookie season with the Battery in 2022.
Hartford Athletic announced the signing of former Indiana University standout and Charleston Battery midfielder Joe Schmidt.
The 25-year-old comes two Hartford off the back of two seasons with the Charleston Battery, most notably recording 20 appearances in a breakout rookie campaign in 2022.
Schmidt enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Indiana University, captaining the team during his final season in 2021 and leading the team to a pair of Big Ten regular season and tournament titles in 2018 and 2020. The defensive midfielder made a total of 56 starts in 73 total appearances across four seasons, tallying three goals and eight assists.
In 2022, Schmidt saw his playing time reduced, only making nine appearances for the Battery, who advanced all the way to the USL Championship final in 2023 before falling to Pheonix Rising FC.
Schmidt is the sixth new signing of the young offseason for the Green and Blue. He joins defender Thomas Vancaeyezeele, midfielder Emmanuel Samadia, midfielder Jay Chapman, midfielder Joe Farrell and goalkeeper Renan Ribeiro as the current new additions for Hartford in the offseason. Danny Barrera is the only confirmed returner, while the search for a head coach is still ongoing.
