Hartford Athletic Transfer Tulu To San Antonio FC
The defender makes the move out west after more than two seasons and almost 4,000 minutes in the heart of Hartford's back line.
Hartford Athletic announced Wednesday that defender Tulu had been transferred to Western Conference side San Antonio FC, the third such midseason transfer in club history.
The experienced defender leaves after two full seasons with Hartford, having been signed prior to the 2021 campaign. In three years, he made 54 appearances and logged just under 4,000 minutes as the centerpiece of Hartford’s defense.
Tulu immediately broke into the starting lineup in his first season in 2021, starting 27 matches and leading the team with 135 clearances and 31 blocks. He did not see the field as much through the opening half of last season, but reintegrated himself into the starting XI in the second half, starting 18 times in 23 appearances, including 15 starts in the club’s final 17 matches of 2022.
In 2022, the Togolese international continued to put up impressive numbers despite seeing less time on the field, capping off an impressive run of form on the back end of the season by finishing second on the team with 27 blocks and third with 35 clearances, scoring two goals. His performances earned him a Fans Choice Awards vote as the Most Improved Player in 2022.
In the opening 10 fixtures of Hartford’s 2023 USL Championship, Tulu has seen 55 minutes of action through two appearances off the bench. He departs the club as a fan-favorite on social media, seeing countless messages of support upon the announcement of the move across Hartford Athletic’s social media pages on Wednesday.
An official club statement concluded, “Hartford Athletic would like to thank Tulu for his contributions to the club and wish him the best in his career going forward.”
