Hartford Athletic Fire Tab Ramos
Assistant coach Omid Namazi will take over the head coaching role for the Green and Blue, beginning with the club's matchup with Loudoun on July 3.
Hartford Athletic announced Monday afternoon the dismissal of head coach Tab Ramos, who departs after less than a year at the helm of the USL Championship club.
The move comes after a disappointing first half of the 2023 USL Championship season that saw Hartford pick up only two wins through their opening 16 matches, conceding a league-leading 34 goals in that stretch. They lost a staggering 10 games in that time, including a 0-2-3 record in June that saw Hartford drop three straight matches at Trinity Health Stadium.
Ramos arrived in Hartford for the tail end of the 2022 season following the departure of former head coach Harry Watling. The former Major League Soccer and U.S. Men’s National Team man gave Hartford fans reason to be excited, winning three of the club’s final six matches in what was an otherwise disappointing 2022 campaign.
However, that momentum did not carry into 2023. Despite making several investments and adding experienced players to the squad, Hartford never quite clicked through the first half of the season as defensive issues continued to persist from week one.
An official club statement included the following quote from Hartford Athletic chairman Bruce Mandell:
“This offseason we made a substantial investment in our roster and our coaching staff with the expectation that we would be competing for a championship,” Mandell said. “The results have been disappointing and have failed to match the talented roster we have assembled. I want to reaffirm to our fans and supporters that we are committed to building a winning club that makes our city and state proud. We will do what it takes to find the right formula to compete and win in this league.”
Assistant coach Omid Namazi will take over the head coaching role for Hartford and will officially take the sideline for Hartford’s matchup with Loudoun United on July 3. He was an assistant to Ramos during his last stint with MLS side Houston Dynamo, and his coaching experience also includes time with the U.S. Women’s National Team and the U.S. Youth National Teams.
