Dylan Borrero Receives Red Card After Missing Midweek Game
Polster on Borrero: “He’s a fantastic player when he’s focused and he’s in the game. But at times, there’s some immaturity in there."
Dylan Borrero was ejected 14 minutes after entering Saturday’s game against Charlotte FC. It was a moment that New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter discussed with the referee after the game.
Borrero was whistled for a sliding challenge on Nathan Byrne in the 70th minute. The winger expressed his frustrations regarding the call, leading to an early exit.
The broadcast said, “VAR has confirmed double dissent for Borrero.” Meanwhile, MLSSoccer.com states that one yellow card was “for the foul” while the second was “for poor sportsmanship.”
The Blazing Musket is attempting to get clarification regarding the reasons behind the cards. We will update the article if we get more information.
Regardless, Porter was asked about the moment during his post-game press conference.
“I asked the official after the game,” Porter said. “That's what I calmly asked him [Mark Allatin] after the game. Why did he [Borrero] get a red card and two yellows? Was that worth it?
“And he said that he, Dylan, was having a go at him and he said that if he did not address it, that he would get pressure from PRO [Professional Referees Organization]. That's what he said.
“He admitted that he missed the call, and Ted Unkel also said that he missed the call. And I asked, 'Well, if you miss a call, then players are going to be frustrated. So why give two yellows?' I understand one yellow, but I don't understand two yellows when you miss the call.
“But also, to be fair, I don't know the exact wording that he used when he was having a go at him. It would seem to me that a yellow would have been enough, especially when he missed the call. That's just my opinion.”
Teammate Matt Polster noted that it was “clearly a very good tackle, never a foul.” He then explained that the Revs must maintain focus, even if a call doesn’t go their way.
“I think we just need to let things go at times and know that as long as we continually execute the gameplan and we’re mature, don’t let things affect us too much, we’re going to find ways to score goals and play well,” Polster said.
Borrero didn’t see the field during the midweek game against CF Montreal, which Porter described as a “coach’s decision.”
The 22-year-old has shown some skill since joining the Revs in April 2022, as he’s collected five goals and six assists in 34 games. Three of those assists came after he returned from an ACL injury this year.
That said, there have been times when Borrero hasn’t made the best decision.
“I’ve talked to Dylan in the past and he needs to just become more mature in these situations,” Polster said. “He’s a fantastic player when he’s focused and he’s in the game. But at times, there’s some immaturity in there.
“He’s a very good player when he’s fully committed. Obviously, just because he got emotional, it got the better of him. It is what it is, that’s in the past and we’ll have to focus on the next game without him.”
It seems that Polster has assumed the role of team spokesperson.
Oh, no, not the dreaded cliche "It is what it is" form Porter.
That always says exactly nothing.
Borrerro made a clean strip of the ball, got a dumb, erroneous yellow, and then starting verbally abusing the ref. Ref made a mistake, Borrero's frustrations with his season erupted, and Porter is left to blame it on fictitious "immaturity" - Borrero is a grown man, and has exceptional soccer skills.
Let him find another team where he can flourish - it's not going to be on Porter's Revs.
