Gil didn’t start this Sunday’s game against LAFC due to a knock. He came off the bench to replace Gustavo Bou in the 63rd minute but exited in the 91st.

Moments before the substitution, Gil overextended his leg in an attempt to control the ball. Soon after, he clutched his left leg.

After the game, head coach Bruce Arena said, “[Carles] had a little bit of a muscle strain and we knew we were only going to play him 30 minutes today and again he suffered another muscle injury.”

On Tuesday, Arena told local media, “He feels better today. So, you know, we’re hopeful as we get through the week he’ll be available.”

The injury is a tough one for the Revolution as Gil is the team’s attacking centerpiece. This past weekend, the Revs continued to use the 4-4-2 with Bou playing as the 10.

In his post-game press conference, Arena noted, “We played [Bou] out of position because of the injury to Carles. We look forward to getting him fitter and putting him in a more comfortable position on the field.”

It’s possible that Bou plays as the 10 again in the same formation this weekend, but there are other options that should be explored.

The Revs could move Dylan Borrero into the midfield with Bou playing as a striker. Another midfield option is Homegrown product Jack Panayotou, who missed some time due to illness.

The team could also opt for a new formation. During preseason, they experimented with a 5-3-2 and 4-2-3-1.
