Caleb Porter Impressed With Tomas Chancalay: "He's Got Goals In Him"
The head coach was happy with the DP's performance and the chances the team created.
New England Revolution fans should get used to Tomas Chancalay finding the back of the net.
After the club made Chancalay’s loan move a permanent stat, Revolution fans were excited to see how the new designated player would perform in a full season. Based off his performance against Club Atlético Independiente, that transaction was a steal.
Chancalay netted New England’s only goal against the Panamanian side. It was the pivotal moment of the match and was enough to earn the 25-year-old Man of the Match honors.
A long ball toward the box from Nacho Gil found the head of Giacomo Vrioni who wiggled it over to Chancalay at the top of the area. The Argentine slotted the low strike over the goalkeeper to secure a victory for the Revs.
Along with being pleased with Chancalay’s performance, head coach Caleb Porter was pleased with the chance creation of his team as a whole on Wednesday evening.
“Yeah, I thought we created a lot of chances,” Porter said after the victory. “Of course, we only get one goal. Maybe you look back on the game and say we should have had more. I think that’s for sure a takeaway. But I always believe that if you’re creating chances that the goals will eventually come, and I thought we had a lot of very good chances tonight. I’m glad we did get the one goal, which is a massive goal on the road in the first leg. It gave us, obviously, an advantage now in the aggregate going back for the second leg at home. Chancalay, he's got goals in him. He’s very direct. He’s always looking to shoot. He’s got quality around goal so it’s great for him to get his first of the season.”
Chancalay showed his skill off throughout the night. He had some quality interplay with Carles Gil and Vrioni and simply looks worth every penny. Imagining a Revolution starting XI featuring Dylan Borrero and the 25-year-old on the wings should have the rest of MLS feeling a bit uneasy.
But for now, Chancalay will have to take the brunt of the workload for New England. Teams consistently dial in on Gil which could leave the winger with opportunities to pounce. As Porter said, Chancalay has goals in him; but the 25-year-old will need to ensure they come at a consistent clip.
