Boston's NWSL Team Could Play In Renovated White Stadium
The Boston Unity group could partner with the city to renovate White Stadium, according to The Boston Globe.
A renovated White Stadium in Franklin Park could be the home of a new Boston franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League.
The Boston Globe published an article on Tuesday outlining a public/private project that aims to modernize the aging 10,000-seat stadium.
The City of Boston is currently accepting proposals for a private entity to lease and fund one-half of the renovation. The city would fund the other half, as well as new training and fitness areas, physical therapy facilities, locker rooms, community space, and offices for the Boston Public School Athletics Department.
“Boston Unity,” a female-led group of investors looking to bring an NWSL team back to Massachusetts, could be the ideal partner for the city.
Boston Unity would help pay for the renovations, paving the way for a stadium that would make their franchise bid more appealing.
The Boston group would be responsible for maintaining the field. Boston Public School student-athletes would have access to the field when the NWSL team isn’t using it.
“That would be an incredible opportunity for Boston Public Schools and the opportunities for young people to see, up close, the city add another championship team and to see athletes at that level with women’s soccer taking off around the world,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu told The Globe.
The Globe reports that the city has been in discussions with Boston Unity for months. Proposals for the project are due in late June.
