Andrew Farrell "Does Life-Changing Things [For] People In The Community"
Farrell will stay in New England for a record 13th season.
The smile on Curt Onalfo’s face when asked about Andrew Farrell’s new role with the New England Revolution says a lot about the veteran defender.
On Monday, it was announced that Farrell signed a one-year contract to keep him in New England for a record 13th season. Additionally, Farrell will assume a Player Professional Development Role as an assistant coach in the academy.
“He will be coaching, when he has time, in the academy to help our young players, which he’s already spent time with,” Onalfo explained.
Farrell, the Revs’ leader in games played, starts, and minutes, already participates in many off-field activities related to the club. He’s worked with Special Olympics Massachusetts, the Jessie Rees Foundation, and more.
A three-time winner of the club’s Humanitarian of the Year award, Farrell was one of three finalists for Major League Soccer’s 2024 Audi Goals Drive Progress Impact Award.
“It just goes beyond soccer,” Onalfo said. “He is one of those rare human beings that you look at and he is able to change people’s lives. He does life-changing things [for] people in the community.
“I remember going to the [Special Olympics] Unified press conference and the signings that we had and talking to the families, and how much he has impacted those people, it just blows you away. He is a class act.”
Farrell is also often recognized by teammates as one of the most helpful players in the locker room. His energy and passion for soccer are evident in his words and actions.
Drafted by the Revs in 2013, Farrell has spent his entire career in Foxborough. He has been called Mr. New England and a Revolution Legend by fans and teammates.
While nothing is certain, the 32-year-old could spend his entire career with the Revolution.
“He has this infectious, charismatic personality that I want in our club,” Onalfo said. “That enthusiasm and that knowledge that he can pass on will be outstanding.
“It positions him so that when he is ready to stop playing, he can be in our organization in a coaching role. Certainly, just an awesome opportunity to put him in hits unique role and make sure that he stays a Revolution player.”
Absolute legend, so happy that Farrell will stay with the team next year and hopefully transition into coaching full time in the future. Can’t think of a better person to uplift the culture of the academy and organization
It’s so rare to have a team lifer, even more so for that person to be respected and recognized as a true asset. I’m so happy to see Andrew sticking around.
