The New England Revolution are set to host Philadelphia Union on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, with Alhassan Yusuf among the African stars expected to feature in the clash.

Yusuf and Mamadou Fofana will go head-to-head with fellow African stars Olwethu Makhanya, Ezekiel Alladoh, and Philippe Ndinga of Philadelphia Union.

The Revolution sit second in the Eastern Conference with 19 points and a perfect 5-0-0 home record. Philadelphia sit bottom of the table with six points from 11 games, which is their worst start in franchise history.

Meanwhile, history complicates the picture. Philadelphia have won eight of the last nine meetings between these clubs. This record persists regardless of how either team is performing.

Enter Yusuf, who could be the catalyst New England needs to finally reverse that trend.

Alhassan Yusuf’s form for New England Rev?

Yusuf's recent performances suggest he is hitting his stride at the right moment. The 25-year-old has made three appearances in the 2026 season, playing 122 minutes and scoring a 35th-minute winner in New England's 1-0 victory over D.C. United on April 11.

"Yusuf is an athletic, box-to-box central midfielder who has all the qualities we look for in our double pivots," Revolution head coach Caleb Porter said when signing the Super Eagles player. "He is very complete on both sides of the ball and will bring ball-winning defensively and verticality to our attack."

Since joining the Revolution in August 2024 from Belgian side Royal Antwerp, Yusuf has appeared in 41 matches, starting 37, with two goals and four assists.

Why Alhassan Yusuf stands out

What distinguishes the Super Eagles midfielder from many players making the transition to MLS is his trophy record in Europe. At Royal Antwerp, he won the Belgian Pro League title in 2022-23, the Belgian Cup that same year, and the Belgian Super Cup in 2023-24.

He also appeared in all six of Antwerp's UEFA Champions League group-stage matches in 2023-24.

That experience matters against a Philadelphia side whose recent dominance over New England bears little relation to quality, scoring nine goals while conceding 17 this season. Ending an eight-from-nine run requires composure under pressure as much as good form, and Yusuf has demonstrated both in the past.

Tactical key to New England Revs win over Philly

Saturday's predicted lineup has Yusuf anchoring the midfield alongside Brooklyn Raines and captain Carles Gil in a 4-3-3. The Super Eagles player operates in a box-to-box role and contributes defensively.

The numbers at Gillette Stadium this season are striking. New England have outscored opponents 10-1 across their first three home matches, keeping clean sheets in their last two.

Yusuf has been central to that defensive solidity, using his tenacious ball-winning to disrupt opposition attacks before they build.

Against a Union side with a limited attacking threat, his ability to win possession and transition quickly could be the decisive factor.

Yusuf on New England Revolution’s strong home form

Speaking on the team’s perfect 5-0-0 home record, Alhassan Yusuf stressed that the squad must remain focused and never become complacent despite their impressive start at Gillette Stadium.

“I think it's great that we've been on this winning streak [at home], but the most important thing is being relentless, never satisfied, as we always say. We just have to keep going,” Yusuf said.

The Nigerian midfielder also revealed that head coach Marko Mitrović reinforced the importance of maintaining intensity throughout the full 90 minutes during halftime of last weekend’s clash against Charlotte FC.

“[Relentless] is a word that we keep repeating, because the game is 90-plus minutes. It's not about playing 20 or 45 minutes, you have to play from the beginning until the end,” Yusuf added.

Can Alhassan Yusuf end Philly's hoodoo?

On current form and underlying numbers, this should be comfortable for New England. The Revolution are second in the East, unbeaten at home, and facing a team in historic difficulty. But Philadelphia have found ways to win at Gillette before, and eight victories from the last nine meetings is not a coincidence.

Yusuf is the clearest reason to think Saturday will be different. He scored the only goal when the margin was slim against D.C. United. He was consistent enough to start every league game last season. He brings a Belgian title and Champions League experience to a fixture that has repeatedly produced results which defied form.

If New England are to end Philadelphia's run, the Super Eagles midfielder is a key player to watch. Kick-off is 7:30 PM ET, May 9, 2026, at Gillette Stadium.
